Vasily Vatagin - creator of watercolor images of primitive horses

The State Darwin Museum exhibits are amazing. The museum houses a unique collection of works of the Soviet artists-animalists dedicated to the evolution of horses. The most notable of these are the works of Vasily Vatagin.

A series of works dedicated to the evolution of horses, according to the theories of Charles Darwin, was created by the artist commissioned by the first Director of the Museum, Alexander Kots. He paid particular attention to Eokippuses - inhabitants of the rain forests and Hipparions - more advanced forms of horses, inhabitants of the steppe.

Vatagin’s paintings traced the transition of horses from forests to open spaces, changes in their body shapes, sizes and strengthening of their extremities. In his book Imaging an Animal, Vasily Vatagin said: "One has to ponder over the color of primitive animals. To build their forms, there are skeletons and the anatomy related to them but coloring depends entirely on your imagination.”
